Hello! I’m Jenn and I’m here to help you eat your veggies! It’ll be fun, painless, and oh-so-delicious as I teach you how to plan your meals with fresh, seasonal produce with a little help from healthy pantry and freezer staples. Want the best appetizer at the party? These easy cheese sausage bites are so delicious…crispy wontons filled with a savory sausage filling. yum!
It’s a safe bet that of all of you tuning in to the big game this weekend, roughly 69.3% of you will only be there for the food.
The question is, have you started thinking about what you’re going to eat while that football is being thrown here and there? This is a very important issue that should not be taken lightly.
Southwest Chicken Wonton Cups
I love finger foods with all my heart. Appetizers and dips and little snacks are my jam and having a whole spread laid out on the table or counter makes my heart swell with joy. So while I may not be the biggest football watcher on the planet, you say the words “there will be food” and I’m there.
While we don’t usually host or go to huge parties on Super Bowl Sunday, I can still appreciate a really, really great appetizer (so delicious that it definitely should NOT be saved just for football). And these Easy Cheese Sausage Wonton Bites are insane.
My Aunt Marilyn brought them to a family dinner a while back and I’ve made them several times since then, always getting requests for the recipe. The flavors are simple but delicious and they are very easy to make. Plus, anything made small enough to pick up and pop into as you casually walk by is a winner in my book.
The success of this recipe depends on a) using a muffin pan (this is my favorite USA brand muffin pan:

) and b) bake the wonton wrappers on their own for a few minutes before filling them with the delicious cheese + sausage mixture. Doing so will ensure those crispy edges stay crispy! And that’s what you want.
While the wonton wrappers are baking for a minute, cook the sausage with some chopped green pepper. You’ll be adding a healthy dose of cheese and ranch dressing (or blue cheese, yum!) once it’s cooked, so prepare accordingly. I think it will say a lot about a person if they go the ranch route or the blue course route.
Pack the filling into these little wonton cups and bake again until golden brown, bubbling, and bubbling. These Cheese Sausage Wonton Bites are delicious warm or at room temperature. And if you’re a sausage lover, I seriously dare you to eat just one. The crispy wonton pieces with the cheesy and spicy filling are an incredibly tasty combination.
If you’re looking for some other snack inspiration, here’s a look at some of my other favorite appetizers/snacks. I think pepperoni pizza rolls or homemade pepperoni pizza rolls are almost a no-brainer for a party (football or not!), but that might just be the pizza lover talking to me.

Cheese: I think it helps to grate the cheese finely (or use finely grated cheese) – it will fill the wonton cups a little easier than large grated cheese.
Sausage: I use the full 16 ounces of sausage and really pack it into the wonton wrappers. If you don’t want them as full, use 12 oz.
Dressing: The flavor of these little bites depends a lot on the type of dressing you use, so choose a brand that you already like the taste of!
