Tuna Appetizer Recipe – Spicy Ahi Tuna Avocado Tartare Bites are easy to make for a healthy delicious appetizer with all the flavors of a spicy tuna roll served on tortilla chips. Perfect for parties and holidays.

This is a great recipe to use up bits and pieces of fresh sushi-grade tuna. When I made my Spicy Ahi Tuna Avocado Cucumber Appetizer, I needed uniform pieces of tuna, which resulted in some irregular pieces and tuna scraps. These scraps are perfect for making this easy appetizer.

We finished the trip with a stay in San Juan, Puerto Rico, where we found a phenomenal Asian-fusion restaurant at the base of our hotel and fell in love with the unique flavors they offered! Spicy Tuna Tartare + Avocado Stacks

While the ahi is roasting and marinating in olive oil (this keeps the fish hydrated and flavorful, you can do this an hour ahead or a few minutes ahead depending on your timeline), take your cilantro, garlic, lime juice, avocado, ginger, jalapeno, wasabi and 2 tbsp of your olive oil and put it in a food processor or blender. Mix until a nice thick paste, or tapenade. We transfer this to a squeeze bottle for easy opening of our crackers when they are ready.

While your oven is heating to medium high, take the ahi and place it on tin foil in a baking sheet or other large flat container. Spread all your black pepper evenly over it and gently press the pepper onto the ahi.

When your skillet is at temp, sear the top and bottom of your ahi steak. Let the ahi sit for about 1 minute on each side, so it develops a bit of a crust. Once done, remove the ahi from the skillet and transfer to a clean cutting board. Slice into 1/2 inch cubes.

Using your squeeze bottle or spoon, top your Mary’s Gone Crackers with your tapenade. You can be as generous as you want with these.

Finish by taking your seared ahi tuna cubes and placing them on top of your crackers and tapenade. Top with cracked pepper and sprouts. With tender rare centers and plenty of flavor from a simple homemade marinade, these Sesame Seared Ahi Tuna Bites will be a hit at your next gathering. You only need a handful of common ingredients and about 20 minutes of marinade. Then give them a quick sear and serve with toothpicks for a delicious, easy and gluten-free seafood meal.

Ahi tuna is almost always served raw in the middle, so it’s safest to use high-quality, sushi-grade (or grade 1) ahi from a reputable seller. The fish market or counter should be able to answer any questions you have about the quality/source of their ahi tuna.

Technically, you can serve fully cooked ahi tuna, but it tastes very different from seared ahi tuna. Tuna cooked all the way through tends to taste better than canned tuna; dry and fluid. Pan-seared is generally considered the best way to cook ahi tuna.

It is important to make sure your ahi tuna is not overcooked, as overcooking creates an unpleasant texture that is chewy and dry. For ahi tuna steaks that are at least 1 1/2 inches thick, we recommend searing on high heat for 1 1/2 minutes per side. For thinner tuna steaks, sear only 1 minute per side.
