Today we are making plain chocolate lava cakes. While the Peanut Butter Chocolate Lava Cake is truly magical, we’ve had many requests for a plain chocolate version. So we decided to fix them. It’s a chocolate-melted lava cake.

Molten cakes are always a crowd favorite and are infinitely better when made fresh at home. You’ll love that lava cakes are single servings, just like chocolate brownies. If you prefer a gluten-free option, consider making a rich and powdery flourless chocolate cake.

The full printable recipe is below, but before we get started, let’s go over it quickly so you understand each step.

If 4 or 6 lava cakes are too much to have around, try this 2-serving recipe for chocolate fudge cake instead.

We highly recommend using 6-ounce ramekins for these lava cakes—they’re the perfect size for these one-serve desserts. Plus, you can use the same ramekins for 2-person Chocolate Fudge Cakes, Chocolate Souffle, Peanut Butter Chocolate Lava Cakes, and Lemon Pudding Cakes.

If you don’t have ramekins, you can use a muffin tin. To prevent the lava cakes from sticking, grease 6 muffin tins and sprinkle with cocoa powder. Because your lava cakes will be slightly smaller, you will get 6 lava cakes instead of 4. Bake at 425°F (218°C) for 8-10 minutes. Use a spoon to remove the cakes from the pan and place each one upside down on plates.

This email series is a great place to start. I’m going to give you some of my most popular recipes and show you why they work. EasyChocolate Lava Cakes are mini cakes of warm fudge, topped with a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream and then drenched in a magical chocolate coating.

One of my favorite desserts is the chocolate lava cake at Chili’s. It’s a small chocolate cake topped with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream, with a warm frosting center. They dip the top into a magical chocolate shell. This is amazing!

We don’t get to Chili’s very often, so I was so excited when my little sister told me how to make these easy chocolate lava cakes at home! These divine mini-desserts couldn’t be easier to make and are a huge hit for dinner or guests.

The cake is so soft and the hot chocolate oozing from the center is irresistible!

Chocolate Lava Mug Cake

I love that you can freeze these too! The recipe makes 9, so if you don’t need all 9, freeze the rest for later. All you do is microwave them and nuke them for 30 seconds. So easy and so good!

**FOR FREEZING: Prepare cakes as directed. Cool completely before storing in a tightly sealed freezer container or ziplock bag. (Release as much air as possible before sealing.) They freeze well for up to a month.

**TO REHEAT: place one frozen cake on a microwave safe plate. Heat for 30 seconds or until cake is completely melted and heated through. Serve hot.

Cakes. Has there ever been a sweeter line of words? Has there ever been a better, more decadent or more chocolatey dessert? I don’t think so.

With soft, gooey exteriors and positively molten chocolate interiors, these are not only decadent and rich, but quick and easy to make. Yes indeed! Lava cakes are pretty easy to make

Keto Chocolate Peanut Butter Lava Cake

I’ve shared many desserts in the past for my fellow chocolate lovers, from chocolate pie to cute homemade cupcakes and chocolate cakes, but this

Preheat to exactly 450F (235C) before adding the lava cakes, so turn it on before you start cooking. My oven takes 15-20 minutes to heat up and often “beeps” long before it’s preheated and ready, so I keep two oven thermometers in it to be honest.

Allow your lava cakes to cool for a few minutes (carefully) then invert onto a plate and serve warm. The top may be a little cavernous, that’s okay! That chocolate cake ring will keep the lava in the center, where it should be.

For a pretty look and bonus taste, I always like to sprinkle with powdered sugar or serve with homemade whipped cream or vanilla ice cream and a little strawberry sauce.

Flourless Chocolate Lava Cake

Technically you can and so can I. But for the best flavor and lava flow, I recommend using baking sticks. Because of the additives in the chocolate chips that help them keep their shape, the lava doesn’t look as rich and clear when using chips.

You can make the dough in advance and portion it in an airtight container in the refrigerator or in advance ramekins (cover with plastic wrap). Bring to room temperature and then divide into ramekins and cook as directed. The dough will keep in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

Yes! If you have a 6 large jumbo muffin pan you can use that instead, see my notes on the recipe.

It’s difficult to bake in anything smaller because the lava can cook in a hurry, so proceed with caution if you’re trying to use anything smaller than a jumbo muffin tin.

Vegan Chocolate Lava Cake (gluten Free)

This happens when cakes are baked too long. Is your oven running a little hot? Check the temperature or try taking the lava cakes out of the oven a few minutes earlier next time.

My easy chocolate lava cake recipe uses only a few simple ingredients and takes less than 30 minutes to make. This easy recipe is every chocolate lover’s dream!

¹Chocolate Chip Substitution: I tried this recipe with semi-sweet chocolate chips (1 cup) instead. The lava cakes will still come out, but I personally felt that they were inferior to those made with premium chocolate bars and the filling was not melted.

²Coffee: This doesn’t make your lava cakes taste like coffee, it just accentuates the chocolate flavor. Highly recommend!

³To make without a ramekin: If you don’t have a ramekin, you can use a 6-piece jumbo muffin pan instead (the recipe will make 6 cakes since the cavities of the meatball pan are smaller). In this way, you need to cook for about 6-7 minutes.

Advance preparation: The dough can be prepared 3 days in advance. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator, then bring to room temperature and cook as directed. While baked lava cakes can technically be kept for up to two days or frozen for a few months before tasting, I feel like they lose quality when they’re not hot from the oven.
