Now I know mine aren’t 100% true cake pops. It’s basically a cake ball with a stick in it, but people can still carry it around like cake pops. Who wants messy hands? Anyway, I’ll tell you at the end of the post how to make these into legitimate cake pops with the cake part on top and the sticks coming out on the bottom.

How To Make Cake Pops

Prepare the cake mix from the box as directed on the box. Cool the cake completely. Wash your hands. Then crumble the cake with your hands in a large bowl. Mix about 1/3 cup of the icing (I used store-bought milk chocolate) by hand. The mixture should be dense but not sticky. The sticky cake balls annoy me. Pick up a cookie scoop (I used my favorite 1.5T scoop). (Remember, everyone needs a cookie scoop or three.) Then, as you scoop out the cake mixture, scoop out the mixture by wrapping it in a scoop (I rub the open side of a cookie scoop into the inside of a bowl). Crush the mixture with your hands and pack it tightly into a ball. Roll into a nice looking ball. Roll remaining mixture into balls (my cake mix made 18 balls).

Gather Candy Melts (I got them from JoAnn Fabric) and a small microwaveable dish (I used a small oatmeal bowl). Put about 5 of them in a bowl and heat them in the microwave to melt them. Next grab your cake pop sticks (I got them from JoAnn Fabric). Dip the sticks into the melted candy melt and quickly stick them down over half of the cake pops. Repeat with remaining cake pops. Then set the pops on the cookie tray. Freeze for about 15 minutes (it doesn’t go in the freezer, so I put it in the fridge for 30 minutes. It worked well). Place the Candy Melts in a microwaveable mug (I filled the mug to the top). Next, melt the Candy Melts according to the directions on the packaging. Dip the cake pops into the mug and coat them evenly. Let the coating come off. Place pops on cookie sheet. Lastly, if using sprinkles, add them just before the coat sets. Repeat for remaining pops.

This may seem like a lot of work, but trust me. Mapping everything is a breeze. I spent probably an hour on this (excluding baking and cooling time).

If you want true cake pops rather than cake balls with sticks in them, place the sticks in Styrofoam to secure the coating instead of drying on a cookie sheet. I wanted mine to sit on a platter, but still pop, so I went the way I did.

FYI, the Candy Melt coating is really nice. I used chocolate cake and you hardly say there is a dark cake underneath the coating. Thought I’d dump it there.

Note: Candy Melts are available in a variety of colors. But if you can’t find the color you need, you can use gel food coloring. Do not use food coloring drops.
