If you’ve been following me on my Insta stories (or my blog) you’ll know that I’ve been busy trying and sharing breakfast recipes from around the world and somehow haven’t posted an English classic yet. A full English breakfast (or in this case a vegetarian full English breakfast!).

Now, I’m not going to pretend that everyone in the UK eats this way every day, but I’d be surprised to learn that any Brit hasn’t had a traditional English breakfast at least once (or a dozen times) in their life. ! After sharing other hearty breakfast recipes like Mexican huevos rancheros, Indonesian coconut milk rice with fried tempeh (nasi uduk), and sweet potato egg breakfast hash—that’s why!

Whether you enjoy it as a classic “hangover cure”, eat it at a cafe, make it for dinner (breakfast for dinner is the best, right?!) or just make it for breakfast (of course it’s great!) , once once you do, you’ll want it again and again.

The best part is that while the Full English may conjure up images of bacon, sausages and black pudding, you can make a full breakfast that’s just as tasty and satisfying without any meat at all. Don’t you believe me? Read on for the best vegetarian English breakfasts! And it’s all cooked in one pan in less than 30 minutes!

A Full English breakfast (called a Full English, Full Monty breakfast or Fry up) is the “ultimate” English fry-up. Although there are several regional variations, it usually includes sautéed mushrooms, tomatoes, toast (and/or toasted bread), baked beans, eggs (fried, poached, or poached), hash browns (sometimes) and then a choice of meat, bacon, sausage and including black pudding. The result is a hearty, filling meal and the perfect way to start the day.

In fact, this traditional English breakfast is so popular in the UK that many pubs/cafes offer it as an ‘all day breakfast’ – usually replacing it with crispy fries for a more hearty lunch. For this version, we stick to most of the classics, but leave out all the meat for a hearty baked vegetarian breakfast.

Although there are many individual elements to an English fry, I have simplified this recipe as much as possible. So much so that this recipe is for a vegetarian English breakfast in one pot. Just follow my ‘timing’ for when to add the different ingredients and you’ll end up with a delicious baked veggie breakfast and no massive piles of food!

First, clean and chop the mushrooms. I use a paper towel to gently wipe any dirt off the mushrooms. It’s up to you to cut them whole, in half, or into slices for chopping.

Since pan-fried mushrooms will release a lot of water to begin with, I like to start by cooking them alone. First, add the mushrooms to a large dry pan/pan (without oil) and cook on medium heat for a few minutes until most of the moisture is released.

Then add the butter and season the mushrooms with a little rosemary (or herb of your choice), salt and pepper. Stir and fry for another 30 seconds.

Move the mushrooms to one side of the bowl. Then add the tomato to the pan and let it fry gently. This will continue to cook and soften while you prepare the rest of the dish.

I did this with whole tomatoes; but it is customary to cut the tomato in half, so both sides can be fried. Cherry tomatoes can also be used and fried whole.

Add a little extra butter (or oil) to the pan if needed and then add the bread to the empty part of the pan (alternatively, you can butter both sides of the bread before adding it to the pan). Fry gently for a few minutes until golden brown and crisp on the bottom, then flip.

After flipping the bread, add the egg (or eggs) to the pan. If it moves around the pan too much, use a spatula to push it away from the other ingredients until the bottom starts to harden. Then let it gently fry to your desired doneness.

If you want to cook the yolk, you can turn the egg at the end for 20-30 seconds.

Meanwhile, to reheat the baked beans, you can either add them to the pan at the same time as the eggs (to heat for a few minutes) or heat them in a separate pot.

Be sure to gently move the mushrooms around occasionally to make sure they don’t burn on the bottom during the process. If your tomato is halved, be sure to turn it once the bottom is browned and “wrinkled.”

Easy Technique For Making The Best Full English Breakfast

Finally, sprinkle the ingredients in the pan with additional salt and pepper and then serve hot. You can serve it directly in the pan (it is placed on a heat-resistant mat on the table) or you can transfer it to a plate first.

Go ahead: in general, a British fry-up is best when made fresh, and most items taste better when cooked fresh. However, if using home-cooked beans, these can be made in advance. You can also prepare sauteed mushrooms 3-4 days in advance and store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator. You can add both to the pan to reheat (and re-fry a bit in the case of mushrooms).
